DSA has designed the Subsea tension logger to measure and record tension in mooring lines. The system is submersible up to 50m and can be easily installed directly onto a mooring line by divers. Mooring lines are not required to be disconnected for installation, allowing the user to continue operations without a hitch.

  • How it works

    The STL uses a battery powered data logger and a strain gauge sensor to measure and record tensions. The STL consists of a stainless steel tensionmeter and a waterproof electronics housing.

    This video demonstrates the installation of a Subsea Tension Logger (STL) on a 2″ diameter synthetic mooring line typical of those found at aquaculture sites. The STL shown is capable of measuring pretensions of up to 150kN for 3 weeks at 2Hz. The sensor does not require disconnection of the mooring system to be installed.

  • Installation

    Installation can be accomplished in a few simple steps.

    • The anti−chafe protective sleeve is attached to the mooring line.
    • The locking collar is disengaged and opened.
    • The STL is then oriented to the mooring line and then the locking collar is re−engaged to secure the unit in place.
    • The handles are then used to securely tighten the locking collar onto the line in order to ensure reliable and accurate tension readings.

  • Data

    Once the deployment of the subsea tension logger is complete, data can be easily recovered.

    • Remove the housing cap
    • Unplug the power supply
    • remove the memory card

    The time stamped data is stored in easy to read text files on the memory card. The ASCII text files can be easily downloaded, viewed and manipulated in Excel, Matlab or any similar program.
